What Your Phone Case Says About You

Your phone is the accessory you use most and choose least carefully. It sits on restaurant tables, in the corner of every photo, face up next to your coffee. Whatever is on the back of it is doing the same work as a ring or a bag charm, whether you meant it to or not.

So here are six moods, and what each one tends to reach for. Take it as a starting point, not a personality test.

Coquette

Bows, hearts, a little deliberate sweetness. The coquette case is warm rather than loud: Gold, with a heart charm — or the blank heart if you want the shape without announcing anything. Two hearts is not too many. That is rather the point.

It girl

Whatever is next, slightly before everyone else. Silver is the it-girl choice right now: cooler than gold, more deliberate than black, and it photographs beautifully under bad restaurant lighting. Add a star. The Silver case carries silver-tone hardware, so a silver-tone charm keeps the whole thing reading as one piece.

Old money

Nothing new-looking, nothing shouting. Navy with a single letter charm — your own initial, gold-tone, and no second charm. Monogramming is the oldest form of quiet flex there is: it says the object is yours specifically, and it says nothing else at all.

Clean girl

Slicked back, one gold hoop, everything matching. Black or Silver, glossy, and either one charm or none. This is the mood that most benefits from charms being removable — some weeks the answer genuinely is a plain case, and you should not have to buy a second one to get there.

Downtown

Slightly harder, slightly late. Black, and something with a bit of edge to it — an angel wing, or a clover if you like your luck stated plainly. Black case, gold-tone hardware, one charm that looks like it has a story behind it.

Main character

The mood where the phone is a prop. Gold, two charms, and one of them your initial — a letter and a star is the classic pairing. If the phone is going to be in the shot, it may as well be cast properly.

If you are between two of them

Pick the case for the mood you are in most weeks and the charm for the mood you are in this week. The case is the long decision — a color you will carry for a year or two — and the charm is the short one, which is why it comes off. Navy and Black are the two that never argue with anything; Gold and Silver are the two that get noticed. If you genuinely cannot choose, start with a neutral case and let the charms do the talking.
